Calligraphy fonts

 

Calligraphy fonts in Arabic hadwriting are not the same as Arabic fonts in alphabet. Arabic fonts are derived from typography, while calligraphy fonts are a state of art.

 

The Arabic calligraphy, also known as Islamic calligraphy, is the artistic practice of handwriting, also called as the art of beautiful writing. This art form is based on the Arabic script, calligraphy fonts and its Arabic alphabet. Arabic Calligraphy is one of the highest forms of visual art in the Islamic world. Its purpose is both aesthetic and functional.

There is a growing school of Arabic type design and calligraphy dedicated to the preservation and development of the Arabic alphabet and calligraphy fonts, with many young designers being inspired by the language’s rich heritage.

The main challenges for the calligraphy fonts in different calligraphy styles are the complexity of word shapes, which can cause technical and legibility difficulties, then curvy letters that can appear pixelated when in low resolution, a very few books, references or places to study Arabic type design and calligraphy fonts. Also the challenges are the digital piracy of Arabic and calligraphy fonts in the region, which discourages people from pursuing a career in type design or as a master of calligraphy.

There are many different styles of calligraphy fonts in Arabic calligraphy. The different styles of writing used in calligraphy are called scripts. These developed over centuries into formal scripts, created for various purposes and needs. Each script has distinctive shapes of calligraphy fonts and visual characteristics and follows specific rules. Once you begin to recognize these characteristics in calligraphy fonts, you will be able to tell the scripts apart from each other.
The calligraphy fonts in Arabic calligraphy employs a number of different scripts. Arabic calligraphy has 6 main and different calligraphic scripts (or so called styles), which are Thuluth, Deewani, Kufi, Naskh, Riqa and Taliq. Some of the Arabic calligraphy scripts are in more geometric style like Kufi, the others are more in cursive style like Naskh. The best way to begin reading calligraphy is by familiarizing yourself with how the Arabic letter shapes appear in each of the different scripts.

Some calligraphy fonts in the Arabic calligraphy have only one, sometimes two or even three different designs of its Isolated form. The choice of which calligraphy font's design to choose is completely in writers hands. Usually the decision regarding picking up the right design of the calligraphy fonts is based on the composition of the Arabic letters in a word.

Be patient. Sometimes it takes years to be able to decipher a composition of calligraphy fonts. Meanwhile, you can enjoy its aesthetic beauty. A certain amount of ambiguity is a part of the delight of this art form.
